Mary Huang is from California, USA. She studied at UCLA design/media arts and Interaction Design at CIID. One of the resent project she has been working on for a while is the Typeface. Typeface is an application that produces a  unique typeface based on the user’s face characteristics. Typeface translates the facial dimensions of the user and at the same time it creates a natural handwriting typeface. Not only does this contrast with the geometric qualities generative type experiments tend to take, but also challenges the conventions of typing versus writing. During the whole process you can write in a text field and view the changing of the type. The project is currently under development so there is no downloadable version. We hope for one in the near future.

Doug Clouse and Angela Voulangas’ book The Handy Book of Artistic Printing is one of the best publications devoted to the history of American artistic printing. This handsome book which was recently published by the Princeton Architectural Press, takes you back to the late nineteenth century where letterpress printers, engravers and lithographers boldly challenged the rational sobriety of traditional design by introducing intricate borders, corner embellishments and quirky typefaces. The particular aesthetic movement was spread from Britain to the United States and was quickly embraced by consumers who eventually forced manufacturers and printers to satisfy market demand with a loosely interpreted notion of the artistic. Eventually, ornate typography became the style of choice for printed matter, only to fall out of favor at the end of the nineteenth century. The Handy Book of Artistic Printing features more than 150 examples of promotional printed pieces and type specimens of that period anything from advertisements to book covers, cards and flyers. The book is particularly useful to graphic designers, fine artists and type designers.

You may already know ffffound.com, an image collective website, but now we got welovetypography.com the ffffound for typographic maniacs.
The founder of this website is Johno who also runs Ilovetypography.com. WLT is not an one man show as there are several other friends who contribute to this nice project. Well done once again to this collective website as we ALL love typography.

Gadget, New Releases - Parachute® on Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Last September we decided to redecorate our office by placing 3D typography on a wall using an inspiring quote by Oscar Wilde “i have the simplest of tastes, i’m always satisfied with the best”. It was during this process which involved cutting and painting the letters when Stavros started taking pictures. Some of them turned out so good that we decided to place them as wallpapers on our desktops. Two of these, White Letter Mess and Out of the Dark are available free from Parachute’s website.
Meanwhile the third one, Disturbing the Uncool is a concept which came up last June at a local pub where we usually hang out on Thursdays with friends and partners after work. Panos had just come back from the ED Awards ceremony in Stockholm and we were also kind of celebrating. In between xx jokes, pickup lines, alcoholic experiences, designer gossips and ideas, this particular statement did not seem bad at all. Anyhow, the idea was turned into a poster and the following week 50 copies were given out at the pub. Later in November it attracted more public attention at the Adobe D-Day Conference. Now, it is available online as a free wallpaper from Parachute® at the following link.
